I. OBJECTIVES:

1. Aims: At the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

  • Learn vocabulary and understand the text about Alexanda Graham Bell & his career.
  • Talk about him and his famous inventions.

2. Knowlege:

* Vocab: patients, introduce, demonstrate, (to) emigrate, emigration (n), the deaf-mutes, (to) experiment, (to) transmit speech, assistant, exhibition

* Pronunciation: /ʃ/,/æ/, /ə/, /eɪ/, / i:/, /ɪ/

3. Skills: Reading & Speaking.

II. PREPARATION:

1. Teacher: Lesson plan, Textbook, Teacher’s book, cassette, tape

2. Students:

  • Textbook, notebook.
  • Vocabulary: patient, (to) introduce, (to) demonstrate, (to) emigrate, emigration (n),The deaf-mutes, (to) experiment, (to) transmit speech, assistant, exhibition

III. PROCEDURES:

1. Warmer: (6’) Hidden picture

Teacher shows Bell/s picture but it is hidden with three events. Ss work in groups to answer three questions to pick out the picture.

  1. What is the biggest city in Viet Nam? (Ho Chi Minh city)
  2. Where is the Great Wall? (China)
  3. Where is the Twins Towel? (in Malaysia)

2. New lesson:

*) Lead-in:

- Asks Ss to look at the picture and answer the questions.

?Who is he?/ What does he do?/ Where is he from?

I. PRE-READING: (10’)

1. Vocabulary:

- Elicits the words from the Ss and says them out.

- Writes and checks.

+ (To) emigrate (Trans)

-> emigration (n)

Ex: Bell emigated to the USA in 1870s

+ The deaf-mutes:(can/t speak & listen)

+ (To) experiment (Trans)

- (To) transmit speech

- (An) assistant (Picture)

- (An) exhibition (Exam.)

Ex: Bell arranged a lot of exhibitions

- Instructs Ss to read.

- Uses “Matching” to check vocab.

2. Prediction:

- Hangs on the poster and asks Ss to read through the statements.

- Explains: patients, introduce, demonstrate.

- Asks Ss to predict T/F in groups.

II. WHILE-READING: (16’)

1. Check the predictions

- Asks Ss to read the text to check their predictions.

- Gets feedback

2. Ordering statements

- Instructs Ss to choose the correct order by reading the text.

- Asks Ss to read through the statements and then order them in groups.

- Gets feedback.

- Invites Ss to correct the orders.

III. POST-READING: (8’) Interview

- Asks the Ss to work in pairs. One is an interviewer. The other is Bell.

- Answer the questions individually

- Try out & repeat chorally-individually.

- Give the meaning.

- Run through the words.

- Match the words with the Vietnamese.

- Read them through and focus on the information in statements

- Take notes the words.

- Work in groups & give their answers on the worksheets & Write their answers.

- Read it in 4 minutes & pick out the information in groups

- Give their answers and explain.

*) Answer key:

- Listen to teacher/s instructions.

- Read them through and read the text to chose the correct order, then share their ideas in groups.

- Write their orders on the board.

- Practise interviewing in pairs and then play the role to the front.

Asks Ss to make the conversation in interviewing.

IV. HOMEWORK: (2’)

  • Asks Ss to read the text again at home and write the answers for “ interview”
  • Asks Ss to prepare: Write - P.23,24.
    • Vocabulary: delivery service, midday, to reach
    • Grammar: How to write a message
