Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answers to each of the following questions.

The Battle Over Smartphones in the Classroom

The argument over whether smartphones should be banned in schools has been heating up for the last decade. Ask any high school teacher trying to conduct a lesson, and they will tell you that it is exhausted trying to compete with the constant ping of notifications. Is this simply a lack of discipline, or is something else going on? Research by psychologists indicates that teenagers are neurologically wired to seek the dopamine rush provided by social media interactions. This impulse is strongest during adolescence. The researchers conclude that students are chemically driven to check their devices and will therefore struggle to focus on complex academic tasks during class.

Schools in several regions have tested total bans, and the results validate the psychological theories. By removing phones from the classroom entirely, test scores have improved, instances of cyberbullying have dropped. and student anxiety levels have decreased. One study involving 5,000 students revealed that grades in history, science, and math all improved significantly when phones were locked away for the day. Reports from other countries, such as France, China, and Australia, also show that phone-free environments lead to better educational outcomes.

[I] However, not everyone welcomes the idea of a total ban. [II] They claim that it creates safety risks and logistical problems. [III] Others are opposed to the change because they believe smartphones can be used as educational tools for research. [IV] Yet, one unexpected benefit might convince the critics. A pilot program in London showed that face-to-face social interaction during breaks increased by 80% after phones were removed. More research is needed to fully understand the long-term social impact, but it is undeniable that students talk to each other more when they are not staring at screens.
