Building a good relationship with parents is a basic part of a teenager’s growth and development. Let me give you some rules that can help you have a healthy and positive relationship with your parents:
· Communication is the key to any healthy relationship, and it’s important for teenagers to communicate regularly with their parents. Share your thoughts and feelings with them, even if it’s something you think they may not want to hear.
· Teenagers should show respect to their parents, even if they don’t always agree with them. This means listening to their opinions, following their rules about doing or not doing things, and always treating them with kindness and consideration.
· Taking responsibility for your actions is an important part of growing up. Teenagers should be responsible for their behavior, their schoolwork, and the things which they have promised to do. If they don’t meet a promise, they should accept that they might be punished, with a curfew, for example.
· Parents work hard to provide for their children, and it’s important for teenagers to show that they are grateful for their efforts. Do not ignore the many things they do for you. Say thank you!
· Spending time together as a family is important for building strong relationships. Be prepared to spend time with your family, at mealtimes, for example, but turn off your smartphone!
· Ask for help when you need it. If you are having problems with schoolwork or in your relationship with a friend, parents are there to support their children and give advice based on their lifetime’s experience.
These rules are based on my difficult time with my parents when I was 16, and now my time as a mother of a teenager.
