Phân biệt Accept và Except
Cách phân biệt "accept và except". Hai từ này dễ lẫn lộn nhau vì cách phát âm khá tương tự, cho dù ngữ nghĩa khác biệt nhau. Sự lẫn lộn của người sử dụng tiếng Anh nhiều đến nỗi hầu hết các từ điển và sách hướng dẫn dùng tiếng Anh đều cảnh giác đến sự nhầm lẫn này. 1. Accept là động từ, có nghĩa: nhận và chấp nhận.
Ex: John offered her a lift, and she accepted.
=> John mời cô ấy đi cùng xe và cô ấy nhận lời.
Lưu ý:
Trước một dộng từ nguyên thể (infinitive) có "to", ta dùng động từ agree chứ không dùng accept. Đồng ý, chấp nhận làm một việc gì đó cho ai, ta không nói "accept to" mà là "agree to do".
Ex: He agree to accompany the mayor.
=> Anh ấy đồng ý tháp tùng ông thị trưởng.
Ta không nói "He accepted to accompany the mayor.
2. Except có thể là động từ, giới từ hoặc liên từ, có nghĩa: trừ ra, loại ra, không kể.
Ex: They excepted him from the membership list.
=> Họ loại anh ấy ra khỏi danh sách hội viên.
Ex: They were all there except me.
=> Tất cả họ đã ở đó ngoại trừ tôi.
Ngữ nghĩa này có thể dễ dàng phân biệt khi đặt chung vào một câu.
Ex: She excepted all the job conditions except the low pay.
=> Cô ấy chấp nhận mọi điều kiện việc làm, trừ việc trả lương thấp.
