Honeybee Communication
Honeybees communicate with each other by dancing. When a bee finds food in flowers or trees, it goes back to the hive and dances to the other bees. The dance tells the other bees where they can find the food, and how far away it is. There are three types of dances. The dances change to show how far and where the food is.
The round Dance: When the food is less than 50 meters away, the bee communicates only the direction of the food. When the other bees see the round dance, they understand that the food is not far. The only information they need to know is where to fly in order to find it.
The Semicircle (half-circle) Dance: When the food is found 50-150 meters from the hive the bee dances in a semicircle. Then, it moves in a straight line. This dance tells the other bees that the food is a bit far, and the straight line shows them the direction of the food.
The figure 8 Dance: When the food is more than 150 meters away, the bee dances the figure 8 dance. The bee then moves in a straight line, showing the direction of the food. The bee does the dance several times. It shakes its body and moves its wings quickly, making a buzzing sound. The bees understand that they have to travel far this time, since the food is at least 150 meters away.
More than 2,500 years ago, people knew that bees danced to send a message. But it was only in the 20th century that a German processor, Von Frisch, understood what the dances mean. He watched the honeybees for many years and learned about their method of communication. For his work in understanding the bee dance language, he received the Noble Prize in 1973.

CANADA GEESE
Canada Geese are large blue and white birds. When autumn arrives, they have to fly south where the weather is warmer. The winters are so cold in Canada that the birds die if they stay there.
Last spring, Bill Lishman found sixteen young Canada Geese on his farm. They had lost their parents. Bill thought ‘These young birds won’t know what to do in the autumn.’
Bill had a small plane and he decided to teach the birds to follow him. All through the summer, he went on short trips in his plane and the young geese flew after him.
When the cold weather arrived in autumn, Bill flew to Virginia in the United States, 600 miles south of his home in Canada. The geese followed him all the way. Bill left the geese in Virginia and he returned home.
This spring, Bill was waiting for the birds to come back. They didn’t arrive, so Bill flew to Virginia to get them. He looked for them for two weeks but he couldn’t find them.
