I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Aim: By the end of the lesson, ss will be able to use:
- The passive forms in the past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” and “whether”
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
2. Knowledge:
Structures: Passive forms; Reported yes-no questions; Question word + to-infinitive; Verb + to-infinitive.
3. Skills: Reading, speaking and writing.
II. PREPARATION:
1. Teacher: Lesson plan, text book, projector, posters.
2. Students:
- The passive form of past simple tense
- Indirect questions with “if” and “whether”
- Question-words before to-infinitives
- Verb + to infinitive
III. PPROCEDURE:
1. Warm-up: (5 mins)
Rewrite the following sentences using the given cues:
a) They completed Sydney Opera House in 1973. (Passive form)
-> Sydney Opera House………………………………………….
b) Nga asked me: “Is Phong Nha Cave in southern Viet Nam?” (Reported speech)

Act.1: Passive form of past simple tense (10 mins) - Ask Ss to retell the way to change the active form of past simple tense into passive form. - Consolidate the form of passive form of past simple tense. Ex: Sydney Opera House was completed in 1973. * Form: S + was/were + p.p - Have Ss use the given words in brackets to complete the sentences, using passive form of past simple tense. - Calls on some Ss to read aloud their answer. - Get comments from Ss. - Give correct answer. * Answer: a) was constructed b) was designed c) was reached Act.2: Indirect questions with if and whether (10 mins) - Use the example to elicits the way to change a yes-no question into an indirect question. Ex: a) Nga asked me: “Is Phong Nha Cave in southern Viet Nam?” -> Nga asked me if/whether Phong Nha Cave was in southern Viet Nam. b) Nhi asked Nga: “Do you know My Son, Nga?” -> Nhi asked Nga if/whether she knew My Son. - Consolidate the knowledge. - Ask Ss to do Language focus 2 (sentence b,c,d). - Calls on some Ss to read aloud their answer. - Gets comments and correct. * Answer: a) Nhi asked Nga if/whether it was far from Ha Noi. b) Nhi asked Nga if/whether My Son was in Quang Nam province. c) Nhi asked Nga if/whether many people lived at My Son. Act.3: To-infinitive (10 mins) - Ask Ss to look at the examples and elicits the use of to-infinitive and bare-infinitive. Ex: a) She told me how to do this exercise. b) He stopped to make a phone call. c) I can swim. - Consolidate the knowledge. Decide Start Begin Try +to-inf.
