I grow up in Estepona, a small community in southern Spain. At 16, my father asked me to drive him to Mijas, a village 18 miles away, on the condition that I take the car to a nearby garage for servicing. Eager to drive the car for the first time, I accepted. After dropping my father off, I took the car to the garage and decided to watch a couple of movies at the cinema across the street while waiting. Little did I know that I would be so engrossed in the action films that I lost track of time. It was two hours later that I realized I was late to pick up my father.

Knowing he would be upset if he knew I had been at the movies, I decided to tell a lie and told him the car needed unexpected repairs, which delayed me. When I arrived at our meeting spot, I saw my father waiting patiently. I apologized and lied about the delay, but he saw through me deceit. He revealed that he had called the garage and knew I hadn’t picked up the car on time. Overwhelmed with guilt, I confessed the truth.

It was not so much anger but deep disappointment from my father that I could feel at the time. He expressed that he felt he had failed as a father because I felt the need to lie to him. He decided to walk the 18 miles home in the dark to contemplate his perceived failure. Despite my apologies and guilt, he remained resolute all the way home.

Never had I been aware that seeing my father in such physical and emotional pain was distressing and painful experience to a 16-year-old boy. However, it was also a powerful lesson as it taught me the importance of honesty and the profound impact of my actions on those I love.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 35 to 40.

In the next decade, population growth will probably add to the world hunger problems. As the population grows, according to the World Hunger Program (WHP), so will the number of malnourished people. The world's population, estimated at 5.6 billion in 1994, may reach 11.5 billion by the year 2150, and most of that growth is occurring in the world's poorest countries. At least 95% of the global population growth over the next 35 years will take place in the hunger-belt regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. For countries that already have a hard time feeding their populations, growth on a scale of even 3% a year could add significantly to their food problems. This level of growth is already occurring in Namibia and in South Africa, and many other countries are not far behind.

In 1981, The United States recorded a population on the African continent of 481 million people. This number topped 800 million by the year 2000. Africa would have to increase its food production by 4% a year to meet the food needs of its increased population. But Africa's food production is growing by only 1% a year, which means that nations already struggling to meet their people's food needs will have an even greater struggle as populations grow. ‘When food supply grows slower than population,’ says professor DeGregory, a country is in trouble.

35. According to the WHP, what will be increased together with the rapid growth of population?

A. the food production in Africa

B. the number of malnourished people

C. the food provision in the poorest countries

D. the world’s economy

36. For some countries, a population growth of even 3% a year can worsen their _________

A. food problems B. food production

C. population awareness D. economical growth

37. In Africa, food production ____________________

A. has been greatly increased in recent years.

B. is growing more slowly than the population.

C. can eventually meet the needs of population.

D. should increase by 1 percent each year to stop the food problems.

38. What is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. The world’s population would probably double from 1994 to 2150.

B. The hunger-belt regions will account for the majority of global population growth in the next three decades.

C. The only way to slow down the population growth in Africa is to grow more crops.

D. The population in Africa increased to 800 million people in 2000.

39. According to the passage, the hunger-belt regions do not include __________

A. Africa B. Asia C. America D. Latin America

40. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. The efforts to reduce overpopulation

B.Warnings from the World Hunger Program

C. The importance of food production in Africa

D. Population growth putting a strain on the world hunger problems
