Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Hi. This week, I want to explore a common piece of advice about work which many of you have probably heard. It is “Follow your passion”. This advice is often given to people at your stage of life before you go on to higher education, but what does it really mean, and is it actually practical?

Following your passion means choosing a career based on what you love doing. [1] It sounds like a great idea, right? The main advantage is clear. If you love what you do, work won’t feel like work. People who follow their passions tend to be more motivated and happier. [2] However, it is not easy to come up with a true career for many passions. For instance, many people love the arts, but finding a stable, well-paid job in that field can be tough. Also, if you focus only on your passion all the time, you could miss out on other jobs that could potentially be a good fit in the long-term just because they aren’t exciting at first.

Another issue is that, even in interesting jobs, there are times when you have to keep on doing something, even though it is hard or boring. [3] If you are persuaded to give up a job as soon as some part of it turns out not to be your passion, you could end up having a lot of jobs which don’t actually make up a true career.

In my opinion, while it’s wonderful to follow your passion, it’s important to think about practical matters, too. [4] Here’s an idea I’ve come up with. You could start with a job that provides stability and follow your passion in your leisure time. That way, you might eventually find opportunities to bring what you love into your main career.
