Many inventions are the result of hundreds of experiments to find the perfect (19)___________ to a problem. For example, when the famous inventor Thomas Edison was trying to make an electric light bulb, he worked on the problem for two years. He had an interesting view of all the experiments which didn’t produce a light bulb. He said that he hadn’t (20)___________. He had just found three thousand things which didn’t work.

However, sometimes important inventions are made completely by chance. A Swiss engineer told friends that he was walking his dog one day when he noticed that small pieces of a plant were sticking to his dog’s fur. He asked himself why it was happening. When he looked closely at the plant pieces, he saw that they had small hooks on them (21)___________ caught in the fur. He tried putting the pieces on his clothes and found they worked in the same way on certain types of cloth. He developed a system to replace buttons on clothes, and he called the product Velcro, from two French words.

In a few cases, interesting products are invented in very strange ways. In 1853, a New York man was having dinner in an expensive restaurant. His meal included chips, but when he tried them, he told the waiter that they were (22)___________ thick. The waiter told the chef, and that man, called George Crum, said he would make thinner chips. Read the blog and write ONE suitable word in each space. (5 questions)

At my school, the teacher asked us to decide what the (24)___________ important invention in the history of the world was. I thought it would be an easy question, but she asked us on Friday, and here I am on Sunday still thinking about it.

At first, I thought I would decide that it was something medical, because medicine saves so many lives nowadays. Then, when I started to list them, like penicillin and understanding about cells and chromosomes and everything to do with genetics, I realised that most things were discoveries. They were (25)___________ inventions at all.

So then I began to think about our everyday lives nowadays. Information technology is now part of almost everything (26)___________ do and see, with online learning and social media, for example. It even involves things which are nearly here, like 3D printing, humanoid robots and self-driving cars.

I had nearly decided to say the most important invention was the computer, when I had another thought. Perhaps the most important invention is something from hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Agriculture, perhaps, or finding out how to make fire. Then I realised again that these were discoveries, (27)___________, not inventions. But I carried on thinking about the distant past, and finally I came to a conclusion. It’s obvious really when you think about it for long enough. At least, I think it is, but perhaps you won’t agree with me when I tell you my idea.

I am going to tell the teacher tomorrow that I think the most important invention in the history of the world is writing, (28)___________ it changed human communication completely. And communication is what helped people to make all the other inventions and discoveries and to tell people about them when they had been made.
