Why soil is one of the most amazing things on earth
Contrary to the perception of soil as lifeless, it is estimated that a single gram of soil may harbor up to (1) distinct species of microorganisms. In fact, a mere teaspoon of soil contains a greater number of microorganisms than the total human population on Earth. Nevertheless, much of the subterranean biome remains (2) to us, and humans have thus far characterized only a (3) of the life forms inhabiting this complex environment.
