I. Lý thuyết câu chẻ - Cleft sentence với “It”

1. Nhấn mạnh chủ từ

a.Với danh từ/ đại từ chỉ người

It + is/ was + Noun/ pronoun + who + V + 0 ….

Eg: My brother built model houses.

=> It was my brother who built model houses

b. Với danh từ chỉ vật

It + is/ was + Noun + that + V + O …

Eg: His absence at the party made me sad.

=> It was his absence at the party that made me sad.

2. Nhấn mạnh tân ngữ

a. Với danh từ/ đại từ chỉ người

It + is/ was + Noun/ pronoun + who(m) + S + V …

Eg: I met Linh on the way to supermarket

=> It was Linh whom I met on the way to supermarket.

b. Với danh từ chỉ vật

It + is/ was + Noun + that + S + V …

Eg: My brother bought an old car from our neighbor.

=> It was an old car that my brother bought from our neighbor.

3. Nhấn mạnh trạng từ

It + is/ was + Adverbial phrase + that + S + V ….

Eg: We first met in May

=> It was in May that we first met.

4. Câu chẻ bị động

a. Với danh từ/ đại từ chỉ người

It + is/ was + Noun/ pronoun + who + be + PII ….

Eg: Students gave teachers a lot of flowers on Teachers’ Day

=> It was teachers that were given a lot of flowers on Teachers’ Day.

b. Với danh từ chỉ vật

It + is/ was + Noun + that + be + PII …

Eg: People talk about this song.

=> It is this song that is talked about

- Chú ý: Các đại từ who, which có thể được dùng để thay thế cho "that". When và where cũng có thể được sử dụng (informal English), nhưng how và why thì không thể thay thế cho "that" trong câu chẻ.
