Origami is a Japanese art of paper folding. Origami involves folding of paper to form different shapes like birds, animals, buildings, flowers, etc... The art of Origami requires patience and good memory for folding sequence. The sequence can be as simple as 2 folds or as sophisticated as 10 times of folds.

The word "Origami" is formed from "ori", meaning to fold, and "kami", meaning paper as well as God. Paper is believed to have been invented in China in 105 A.D. However, it was not until the 6th century that some Chinese monks carried paper to Japan.

Shortly after paper was available in Japan, Origami started to appear. During this time, Japanese Origami was only used for religious purposes because paper was expensive. Early Origami designs were mysterious symbols for different ceremonies. They were not used for hobby. Later on, when paper was much cheaper, it became more and more popular not only in Japan but also around the world.

The most important material used in Origami is obviously paper. Any paper that can be folded easily and holds a crease can be used. However, you should use the type that has different colors on each side. The paper also needs to be cut in a perfect square to achieve satisfying results.
