I. Listening (2.5 points)

Listen to the passage about the changes in families in Western countries during the last two centuries and decide if the following statements are true (T) or false (F).

Families in the Western world have changed greatly during the last two centuries. Social scientists say that this change in the family is one of the important changes from a traditional society to a modern society.

Before the 19th century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not decide who they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. In the 19th century, most young people could not choose the person they wanted to marry. A marriage joined two people and not two families. Two people could get married because they loved each other, not just because their families wanted them to marry. At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care of their children. Before this, most people did not go to school. The family members all worked together at home. Later, people realized that education was necessary for a good life.

Today many parents think that they should have fewer children so they could give each one a good life. It is important for a mother and a father to spend as much time as possible with their children. Parents should take care of their health and try to give them an education. Home is a safe, warm place for all the family members.

II. Reading (2.5 points)

Read the passage and then answer the questions.

Chúng ta có thể giao tiếp không chỉ thông qua lời nói mà còn qua ngôn ngữ cơ thể nữa. Ngôn ngữ cơ thể bao gồm tư thế, nét mặt và cử chỉ. Vì ngôn ngữ cơ thể rất quan trọng, bạn cần biết cơ thể mình đang bày tỏ điều gì và làm cách nào để hiểu ngôn ngữ cơ thể của người khác. Đây là một vài ví dụ về ngôn ngữ cơ thể và ý nghĩa của chúng. Nếu bạn đứng với tư thế thấp xuống và cúi đầu, điều đó có nghĩa là bạn đang buồn hay thiếu tự tin. Nếu bạn có tư thế đứng thẳng và thoải mái, bạn đang bày tỏ sự tự tin và thân thiện. Nụ cười là dấu hiệu của sự thân thiện và quan tâm. Nhưng đôi khi người ta cười chỉ vì lịch sự. Để có một thông tin khác trên nét mặt một người, nên nhìn vào mắt họ. Sự thân thiện và quan tâm được bày tỏ khi ánh mắt của ai đó bắt gặp ánh mắt của bạn, họ nhìn đi nơi khác rồi lại nhìn vào mắt bạn. Người nào không nhìn đi nơi khác tức là họ đang bày tỏ sự thách thức. Người nào không nhìn bạn tức là biểu lộ sự lãnh đạm hay sự thiếu tự tin. Những cử động của bàn tay có thể cho biết người này đang quan tâm tới cuộc nói chuyện. Nhưng các cử chỉ lặp đi lặp lại - như gõ bút chì hay nhịp chân - thường có nghĩa là người đó sốt ruột hay bị căng thẳng. Hãy tránh xa khỏi người chỉ tay vào bạn khi đang nói chuyện với bạn: người đó có thể đang giận dữ hay tỏ ra là bề trên của bạn.

1. How can we communicate?

=> Body language includes our posture, facial expressions, and gestures.

3. What could it mean if your posture is slumped and your head is down?

4. How do you know a person who is expressing a challenge or lack of interest or is shy?

=> A person who doesn't look away is expressing a challenge. A person who doesn't look at you is expressing lack of interest or is shy.

5. Why should you stay away from someone who points at you while talking with you?

=> Because that person might be angry at you or feel superior to you.

IV. Writing (2.5 points)

Write a letter of about 150 words to your pen pal, telling him/her about your family. Use the guidelines below.

You know, my family has four members: my parents, my brother and me. My father's a doctor and my mother is a teacher. They are quite young in their fourties. My father's name is Bob, but we usually call him Big Bob. My mother's name is Lily, you know, the name of a very beautiful kind of flower. My brother's name is John. And he is ... just like me. We are twins!

We are a very close-knit family and very supportive of one another. In my family, everybody has to do their share of household chores. The interest our family members share closely is telling jokes. I'm sure if you join us, you'll have a nice weekend.
