1. Linking verbs (Liên động từ)
– Liên động từ được dùng để liên kết chủ ngữ với một từ hoặc cụm từ nhằm cung cấp thêm thông tin về chủ ngữ đó. Liên động từ không mô tả hành động mà chỉ diễn tả trạng thái hoặc bản chất của sự việc, sự vật.
– Các liên động từ phổ biến: be, become, seem, appear, become, get, turn, grow, remain, stay,…
e.g. He is hungry.
This dish seems healthy.
– Nhiều động từ chỉ giác quan (look, feel, taste, smell, sound) vừa là động từ chỉ hoạt động vừa là liên động từ.
e.g. You should taste this coffee. It tastes great!
*Lưu ý:
– Đa số các liên động từ không dùng ở các thì tiếp diễn.
e.g. You seem happy. (NOT: You are seeming happy.)
– Theo sau liên động từ là tính từ/cụm tính từ hoặc danh từ/cụm danh từ.
e.g. I feel sorry for his loss.
He became a teacher at 22.
– Các liên động từ diễn tả sự chuyển đổi trạng thái được chia ở các thì tiếp diễn như những động từ chỉ hành động.
e.g. The weather is getting/becoming/turning cooler these days.

*Lưu ý:
– Ta có thể sử dụng “enough” trước danh từ hoặc sau động từ “be”.
e.g. I think I don’t do enough exercise.
