Linda Replies
The problems you are having with your daughter happen all the time between parents and their children.
My first piece of advice is: Don’t worry! This is a consequence of the generation gap and your daughter growing up. It happens to every parent and their teenage children. Shouting at your daughter is a mistake. You should have been more polite with her and asked her politely to turn down her music. Be more polite with her, and she will show you more respect. Try to be more understanding to your daughter and don’t get angry if she doesn’t share your ideas about things like music and fashion.
Your daughter’s behavior is natural and normal. Teenagers want to express themselves by the clothes they wear and the music they listen to. You should give her a little more freedom. You don’t have to give her permission for everything. She will ignore you if you tell her what she can and can't do too much. You shouldn’t have stopped her from going out with her friends because this will make her angrier towards you. Try to get your daughter to bring her friends home, so you can get to know them, too. It’s the only way to know if they are a bad influence or not. Try to show interest in your daughter's ideas, but also try to respect her privacy. There are certain things your daughter wants to keep between her and her friends.
Teenagers always argue with their parents, so don’t worry. Follow my advice, and things will be a little easier for both of you. Good luck!
