The given bar chart gives data about the daily smallest and largest amounts of SO2 and N2O which caused pollution in 4 different cities, namely Los Angeles, Calcutta, Beijing and Mexico City, in the year 2000. Overall, Mexico City was the place most contaminated by the two mentioned pollutants among the four cities.

In Los Angeles, the quantity of SO2 emitted into the atmosphere was lowest, with the minimum number of 2 micro-grams per m3 and the maximum number five times as much. The levels of N2O emission were much higher with the biggest figure reaching up to more than 100 micro-grams per m3 every day. Meanwhile, the environment in Mexico City was severely polluted by SO2 and N2O emission with the least of 80 and 113 micro-grams per m3 respectively.

Unlike Los Angeles and Mexico City, in Calcutta and Beijing, the amount of pollution caused by N2O was less that that caused by SO2. The maximum figures for SO2 emission were 59 micro-grams per m3 in Calcutta and 130 micro-grams per m3 in Beijing while the biggest numbers for N2O in these places were just above 50 micro-grams per m3.

Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Band 8 Sample

Distance learning through an online platform is provided for students as an option to replace traditional classroom at many universities. In my view, such a development, although detrimental at some point, could be seen as an essential step forward.

On the one hand, this way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with teachers in the classroom is negative from two aspects. First, online students cannot develop comprehensively like the way other students who attend classes at school do. During online courses, students can barely make friends or even compete with their peers. This is often linked to the fact that those learners seem to undervalue the significance of interaction and rivalry with classmates in an educational environment which, actually, are great stimuli for scholastic success. Second, participants of online learning programs tend to procrastinate and poorly allot appropriate amounts of time to complete assignments. This form of studying requirestremendous self-discipline as well as organization and time management skills while students usually struggle with balancing their coursework other priorities and easily get demotivated without direct guidance from instructors.

On the other hand, online learning proves to be a great alternative although traditional universities are still widely considered as the best way to acquire knowledge and a diploma. Access to all resources of a traditional course is offered, which empowers learners to freely choose a wide range of different subjects, from science to economics. Furthermore, lower costs and the widespread presence of the Internet allow unlimited numbers of participants regardless of not only their financial background but also current living places. For example, Coursera is a website that offers a variety of courses at reasonable prices and presents legal degrees for participants upon completion of each course.

In conclusion, though there are some drawbacks of courses delivered on websites, I believe the aforementioned online studying method is revolutionary in contemporary tertiary education systems.

Band 8.0 Sample Answers:

There has been an increasing tendency of providing online courses in addition to formal ones by universities around the world. Concerning the effects of such a trend, I firmly believe that the availability of computer-based courses should be considered as a completely beneficial movement.

To begin with, it is a fallacy to consider the provisions of internet courses as a negative trend. In fact, some people insist that opting for online courses could lead to the probability of forming generations of students who would lack critical social skills such as inter-personal and teamwork capabilities. However, such a claimed scenario would not happen with the support of advanced online communication platforms. Thanks to the introduction of effective communication tools such as Skype or Facetime, students could easily interact with each other for academic discussions or team assignments, ensuring their chances to enhance essential communication skills. Therefore, it seems obvious to me that presumed negative impacts of visual classes would not be a matter.

On the other hand, I would strongly argue that the provision of online courses as alternatives is beneficial to both students and universities. Firstly, access to Internet-based courses would enable students, especially those who reside in remote regions, to get access to higher education with ultimate flexibility and convenience. Compared to traditional courses which require student attendance and fixed class schedules. Internet-based ones allow students to study at their own pace by granting them full rights to decide their schedules and academic progress. Secondly? with regard to universities, offering online courses could help them reach more students worldwide with reduced investments. Since classes could be conducted online with no geographic restrictions, colleges would be spared from the costs of expanding their schools yet still able to provide courses for more national and international students.

To conclude, the existence of computer-based courses as alternative options to formal classes should be considered as a profitable education progress in the modern world.
