The given bar chart gives data about the daily smallest and largest amounts of SO2 and N2O which caused pollution in 4 different cities, namely Los Angeles, Calcutta, Beijing and Mexico City, in the year 2000. Overall, Mexico City was the place most contaminated by the two mentioned pollutants among the four cities.
In Los Angeles, the quantity of SO2 emitted into the atmosphere was lowest, with the minimum number of 2 micro-grams per m3 and the maximum number five times as much. The levels of N2O emission were much higher with the biggest figure reaching up to more than 100 micro-grams per m3 every day. Meanwhile, the environment in Mexico City was severely polluted by SO2 and N2O emission with the least of 80 and 113 micro-grams per m3 respectively.
Unlike Los Angeles and Mexico City, in Calcutta and Beijing, the amount of pollution caused by N2O was less that that caused by SO2. The maximum figures for SO2 emission were 59 micro-grams per m3 in Calcutta and 130 micro-grams per m3 in Beijing while the biggest numbers for N2O in these places were just above 50 micro-grams per m3.

Some universities offer online courses as an alternative to classes delivered on campus. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Band 8 Sample
Distance learning through an online platform is provided for students as an option to replace traditional classroom at many universities. In my view, such a development, although detrimental at some point, could be seen as an essential step forward.
On the one hand, this way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with teachers in the classroom is negative from two aspects. First, online students cannot develop comprehensively like the way other students who attend classes at school do. During online courses, students can barely make friends or even compete with their peers. This is often linked to the fact that those learners seem to undervalue the significance of interaction and rivalry with classmates in an educational environment which, actually, are great stimuli for scholastic success. Second, participants of online learning programs tend to procrastinate and poorly allot appropriate amounts of time to complete assignments. This form of studying requirestremendous self-discipline as well as organization and time management skills while students usually struggle with balancing their coursework other priorities and easily get demotivated without direct guidance from instructors.
On the other hand, online learning proves to be a great alternative although traditional universities are still widely considered as the best way to acquire knowledge and a diploma. Access to all resources of a traditional course is offered, which empowers learners to freely choose a wide range of different subjects, from science to economics. Furthermore, lower costs and the widespread presence of the Internet allow unlimited numbers of participants regardless of not only their financial background but also current living places. For example, Coursera is a website that offers a variety of courses at reasonable prices and presents legal degrees for participants upon completion of each course.
In conclusion, though there are some drawbacks of courses delivered on websites, I believe the aforementioned online studying method is revolutionary in contemporary tertiary education systems.

Band 8.0 Sample Answers:
There has been an increasing tendency of providing online courses in addition to formal ones by universities around the world. Concerning the effects of such a trend, I firmly believe that the availability of computer-based courses should be considered as a completely beneficial movement.
To begin with, it is a fallacy to consider the provisions of internet courses as a negative trend. In fact, some people insist that opting for online courses could lead to the probability of forming generations of students who would lack critical social skills such as inter-personal and teamwork capabilities. However, such a claimed scenario would not happen with the support of advanced online communication platforms. Thanks to the introduction of effective communication tools such as Skype or Facetime, students could easily interact with each other for academic discussions or team assignments, ensuring their chances to enhance essential communication skills. Therefore, it seems obvious to me that presumed negative impacts of visual classes would not be a matter.
On the other hand, I would strongly argue that the provision of online courses as alternatives is beneficial to both students and universities. Firstly, access to Internet-based courses would enable students, especially those who reside in remote regions, to get access to higher education with ultimate flexibility and convenience. Compared to traditional courses which require student attendance and fixed class schedules. Internet-based ones allow students to study at their own pace by granting them full rights to decide their schedules and academic progress. Secondly? with regard to universities, offering online courses could help them reach more students worldwide with reduced investments. Since classes could be conducted online with no geographic restrictions, colleges would be spared from the costs of expanding their schools yet still able to provide courses for more national and international students.
To conclude, the existence of computer-based courses as alternative options to formal classes should be considered as a profitable education progress in the modern world.

It is neither possible nor useful for a country to provide university places for a high proportion of young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Answers:
Furnishing the young generations with tertiary education play an indispensable part in the government's policies. However, most policy makers reckon that it is infeasible and inefficient to offer the vast majority of the youth higher education. From my perspective, I completely agree with this statement for the following reasons.
It proves impossible for a country to provide entry to tertiary education for all young people. The first reason is the prohibitive tuition fees and the inability to afford them of the majority of youths. College or university undergraduates are supposed to learn from experiments, purchase costly materials during a term, let alone other field trips if one majors in practical fields of study like engineering or medical. All of these plus the fact that many students from rural areas find it tough to meet only the annual tuition fees, especially in poverty-stricken countries. This leads to the second reason in which I mean government have other priorities such as universal education, healthcare system to invest in.
It also does not seem useful for the whole country once the state wish to accommodate the youth with higher education. This is primarily because there is no guarantee that students will become successful and contribute to the well-being of their nation after finishing their education. There are the cases when distinguished graduates fail to secure a decent job and thus become unemployed, exacerbating the burden on society as a consequence. Even worse, some are likely to slack off with their studies or even drop out of school as they either take higher education for granted or find no motivation in furthering their knowledge, given the thought that tertiary education is subsidized or free of charge.
In conclusion, it's my firm belief that not only it is neither possible nor useful for a country to provide university places for a high proportion of young people

Sample Answer 2
There has been a difference of opinions regarding the accessibility of tertiary education to the majority of young people. In my view, dispensing university educational services on such a large scale brings about no practical values to society, and also, it is rather unfeasible to carry out this policy.
First, widespread entry into university does not seem really useful to a country since the government need to take the needs of both the youth and the economy into consideration. In many countries, especially Germany, vocational training has gained more popularity among young people because it enhances employment opportunities as well as job security upon completion. Furthermore, if everyone could gain admittance to college, it would lead to imbalances in workforce that would greatly damage economic structure. It is because there is little chance that university graduates would choose blue-collar jobs such as working in factories.
Second, I think that it is impossible to provide almost all young people with access to tertiary education. In Vietnam, the demand for entering college never ceases to grow at a rapid rate. This puts the government in a dilemma of whether they should risk allocating their resources and therefore face the possibility of bankruptcy due to exorbitant education costs in many financially dependent universities, like Foreign Trade University or National Economics University. On top of that, it is simply unrealistic for universities to accommodate such a suddenly increased number of students on campus, not to mention the fact that most departments are currently short-staffed.
In conclusion, I strongly oppose the idea of supplying entry to a high proportion of young people owing to the presented arguments above.
Sample Answer 3
It is sometimes argued that providing tertiary education for a massive number of youngsters is both impossible and not essential. I totally agree with this view.
On the one hand, that most young people can enter university is not feasible, especially in developing nations. Firstly, personal financial difficulties may prevent any high school leavers from continuing university education. Tuition fees at this level in several countries are extremely high, so not all the young and their families can afford. A telling example is England where charges a high university fee, leading to a quite low university attendant number in comparison with German whose university system is free of charge. Secondly, educational facilities and infrastructure to secure that a high proportion of young people can have tertiary placement require an enormous investment from the government. Unfortunately, some poor nations have to prioritize basic needs such as food or healthcare for their citizens, so education is not sufficiently subsidized for a high percentage of the young.
On the other hand, it is also detrimental to bestow university education on most youngsters. The initial reason is that this policy can lead to the dearth of manual workers. Because young generations would be all equipped with professional knowledge and skills if this policy were implemented, the higher proportion of them study university, the lower will work for some menial positions. Consequently, vacancies such as taxi drivers and construction workers will lack recruitees. Adversely, this trend also means the increase in unemployment rate in several modern section including technology and science which have too many applicants. Ultimately, there will be an imbalance in labor market.
In conclusion, I believe that it is not only unpractical but also not vital to provide tertiary education places for too many youngsters.

Task 2: Nowadays young people spend too much of their free time in shopping malls. Some people fear that this may have negative effects on young people and the society they live in.To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Model Answer 1:
In recent years, the change in spending money to buy people's needs has occurred dramatically. As a result, it always will be a controversial topic whether it is a bad or positive trend relating to the shopping habit which has become a routine task and even a hobby. This essay, as my point of view, leads to, will try to come up with several considerations as I believe that an intermediate position can be taken relating to this issue.
Shopping, that contradicts the topic regards, is a "nightmare" because the impacts which are dire & inevitable. Consumerism, in some ways, contributes bad things to the society as well as the civilisations. People who overcapitalize their money can spend their revenues in nothing and as a result, they suffer in managing their funding and try to borrow a big amount of money for just their basic needs. Psychologists argue that addiction in shopping which creates consumerism behaviour can lead to several criminal dire effects such as robbery and stealing.
However, without shopping and its relating things governments will face the problem in controlling the economy. The thing which can grow the Gross Domestic Products indicator is expenditures, especially the private one. Without increasing in this indicator, there will be severe implications which the economist called unemployment. The improvement of spending money indicates that people in the country are wealthy and also projects the prosperity of the nation which influences the corporations to produce products in high quantity as well as high quality. Throughout this trend, the employers will try to provide immense chances for people to get their job in the corporations. As consequences, spending in buying products, even it is a hobby or not, with larger portions helps economy matters indirectly.
To sum up, having considered the discussion above, I believe it will always create both positive and negative impacts, but shopping habit can be useful if the shoppers expend their money wisely.

Model Answer 2:
People used to go shopping only because of a daily needs, while recently it changes to be a kind of hobbies for people. Some state that shopping is an activity which can reduce boredom, thus it is great for people to do so. I personally believe that going shopping is not only for spending money, but you can find some benefits by doing this kind of activities. Therefore, through this essay, I will support my view with some considerations.
The first idea is that people love shopping because it can refresh their minds. By going shopping round you will be able to forget the things which burden you. For instance, young adults prefer to do the shopping after having the final examination. They will try to entertain themselves by buying something which is interesting and they will obtain a satisfaction at the time. As a consequently, they directly forget about the difficulties encountered during the exam.
In addition, going shopping is not only the case of buying something such as clothes, bags or even accessories. Shopping also means amusement in which people visit some shopping places to gather with family or friends. They just tend to spend their time in the lovely places which provide a lot of entertainments, thus they can enjoy their leisure time with full of joy and fun.
To sum up, go shopping could be a bad habit that can addict people to do so. However, Shopping is a great hobby which can help people overcoming their stress or even anxiety. It occurs because doing shopping will make them more relax and forget about their problems.

Model Answer 3: Band 7
Many argue that the time youngsters spend on shopping malls is too much currently, and this trend can adversely affect the young and the community in the future. Personally, I completely agree with this opinion for some reasons.
On the one hand, young people nowadays often spend a huge amount of money in a shopping mall. One of the reasons is that they might be obsessed with buying things such as luxurious clothes or jewelry, which are expensive and not essential to spend money on. For example, many young girls are willing to pay 2000 dollars for a T-shirt that is made of a famous brand only to show it to her friends. Furthermore, the money they have spent is not what they have earned but their parents' money. Another reason why many malls are attractive to the young is that there are a rising number of fast food restaurants in them where they sell loads of unhealthy food. Having these kinds of food for a long time contributes to the degradation of people's health.
On the one hand, younger people has spent several hours for shopping and gathering eating in the mall centres, which is considered a waste of time. The more time they use for that kind of entertainment, the less precious time they have for other activities studying or travelling. For instance, young people often have no time doing volunteering but a greater amount of time for shopping with their friends at weekends. It is more sensible for each young individuals spending more time for their families and improving their own knowledge by reading books or learning another languages rather than wasting it in shopping malls. Society absolutely gain nothing and cannot make a progress if there are future young generations who are not hard working and lack effort into enhancing the quality of their own lives.
In conclusion, I believe that the young should spend less their time for shopping malls because it can have a negative impact on them as well as society as a whole.
