Dear Mai,
I’m very pleased that we’re going to be pen pals. I’ll tell you a little about myself, and you can do the same when you write to me.

I learnt English in an unusual way. But for me, it worked! When I was little, we had a satellite TV at home with an English language cartoon channel. My mum knew that English was an important language so even though I was only small, she made me watch it. At first the cartoons didn’t mean much but in the end, as I started to understand the language and really enjoy the cartoons, I watched more and more.
So I picked up English in the same way as an English - speaking child through listening and experiencing it, and not learning it formally in a class. I couldn’t analyse the grammar at all so couldn’t explain it to anyone else but at least I used it naturally and instinctively.
When I did start learning English formally in school, I already knew most of it. But I still did the homework exercises beacause it was useful to keep my lanugage up to date and to correct any small mistakes I made. I plant to learn more languages. I’m sure the key to successs in the mordern world is being multilingual!
