UNIT 1 – ANIMALS

Lesson 1.1 (page 6)

I. Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to point out and say different animals.

Language knowledge and skills

Vocabulary: snake, monkey, horse, camel, hippo, rhino.

Sentence pattern: This is a monkey. - These are monkeys.

That's a snake. - Those are snakes

Skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

1. Competences

Self-control and independent learning: point out and say different animals.

Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to know different animals.

Critical thinking and creativity: learn how to know different animals and spell them correctly and fluently.

2. Attributes

Kindness: support their friends to complete the learning tasks or play the games.

Diligence: focus on the lesson and work hard to complete all the tasks.

Honesty: play fair.

Accountability: appreciate kindness, diligence, and honesty.

Teaching aids and materials

3. Procedures

A. Warm up (5 minutes)

a. Objectives: To review the vocabulary items about the animals, generate students’ interests and lead in the new lesson.

b. Content: Playing the game: “Lucky number” or “Spin the Bottle”.

c. Expected outcomes and assessment

Task completed with excellence:Students can join the game and say the words quickly and correctly.

Task completed:Students can get lucky number and say the words.

Task uncompleted:Students say the wrong flashcards or pronounce the words incorrectly.

Option 1: "Lucky number" game

- Divide the class into four teams.

- Have each team stand in a line.

- Prepare some cards with points on their backs “duck, goat, pig, cow, rabbit” and put them in a box.

- Have each student pick a card from the box and talk about the content of it, e.g., “What’s it? – It’s a goat.” then get corresponding points for his/her team.

- Continue with the other students. The team that gets the most points win.

- Follow and do as guided.

- Pick a card from the box and talk about the content of it, e.g., “What’s it? – It’s a goat.”

Option 2: Play “Spin the Bottle” game

- Divide the class into the groups of five.

- Have students sit in a circle with a bottle in the middle. One student spins the bottle. When it stops, the student who is pointed to has to say, “Excuse me, please!” then continue spinning the bottle.

- Have students continue the game as the same way.

- Follow and do as guided.

- Join the game.

B. Main lesson

1. Presentation (10 minutes)

a. Objective: To help students recognize and say the different animals.

b. Contents: Listening, pointing, and repeating.

c. Expected outcomes and assessment

Task completed with excellence: Students can identify and read out loud the letters correctly.

Task completed:Students can identify and read out loud the letters.

Task uncompleted:Students are unable to point and read the correct letters.

A. 1. Listen and point. Repeat. (CD1 Track 02)

- Arrange the flashcards (the animals) on the board.

- Ask the students to listen and pay their attention.

- Use DCR on Eduhome to play the audio and point to each flashcard.

- Then play the audio again and have them point to the pictures in their Student’s Books.

- Play the audio and require them to listen and repeat.

- Help them with their pronunciation if necessary.

- Have the class work in pairs. One student randomly points to the pictures in their book, and the other one says the words. Then have them swap roles and continue this activity.

- Walk round the class and support them if needed.

- Listen and follow their teacher’s instructions.

- Point to the pictures in their Student’s Books.

- Listen and repeat.

- Work with their partner to complete the task.

2. Play Flashcard peek.

- Have one student come to the front of the class.

- Hold one flashcard facing your body so no one can see it.

- Very quickly show the flashcard to the student and hide it again.

- Have the student guess the new word on the flashcard.

- 5. Repeat with other students and flashcards.

- Play in individual.

- Follow their teacher’s instructions.

- Show the flashcard to his/her friend and hide it again.

- Let his/her friends try to guess the new word.

- Repeat.

C. Practice (10 minutes)

1. Objectives:To practice identifying zoo animals correctly.

2. Contents:Listening and Speaking.

3. Expected outcomes and assessment

Task completed with excellence:Students know how to identify zoo animals correctly.

Task completed:Students can identify zoo animals correctly.

Task uncompleted:Students fail or have a mistake to identify zoo animals.

B. 1. Listen and practice. (CD1 Track 03)

- Use DCR to show the useful language and have students look and read the useful language silently.

- Explain that we use this for introductions, when we meet someone for the first time and their name is unfamiliar.

- Play the audio and have them look at the useful language.

- Ask them to work in pairs and practice the useful language.

- Require them to use the vocabulary from Part A.

- Go around the class and support them if necessary.

- Look and read the useful language silently.

- Listen to the teacher’s explanation.

- Listen and look at the useful language again.

- Work in pairs and practice the useful language.

- Use the new words from Part A when practicing the useful language.

2. Look and put a tick or a cross. Practice.

- Demonstrate the activity using the example.

Option 1: Back - to - back dictation

- Divide the class into pairs and have them sit back - to - back. Give each child a blank sheet of paper.

- Have children draw their favourite animals. Student A says: This is a monkey. - These are monkeys. That's a snake. - Those are snakes and St A writes down the name of that animal. Swap the roles.

- Do as guided.

- Work in pairs.

- Students take turns to say and write the name of the animal.

Option 2: Use DHA on Eduhome

- Open DHA (Unit 1 – Lesson 1) on Eduhome to help students review the vocabulary through games: Look and find, Listen and find, and Grammar.

- Follow their teacher’s instructions.

- Play the game with the whole class.

C. Consolidation and homework assignment (5 minutes)

a. Objectives: To help students remember and pronounce the vocabulary items.

b. Contents: Playing the game “Whispers” and assigning homework in the Workbook.

c. Expected outcomes and assessment

Task completed with excellence: Students can whisper the words to their friends correctly and smoothly.

Task completed:Students are able to whisper the words to their friends.

Task uncompleted:Students fail to listen the new words or whisper them to their friends.
