Cách sử dụng In spite of, Despite

Giống với các cụm từ although, even though và though, inspite of và despite cũng là các cụm từ nối để giả định một điều trái ngược. Bài viết giới thiệu với các bạn học cấu trúc sử dụng In spite of và despite trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh.

I. Khái niệm In spite of là gì? Despite là gì?

- In spite of và despite là hai từ nối thể hiện sự tương phản.

- Đứng đằng sau là một danh từ (Noun), cụm danh từ (Noun phrase), động từ V-ing.

- Có cách sử dụng đối ngược với cụm Because of

- Mang ý nghĩa: mặc dù

Ví dụ:

+ He still came to her house yesterday despite the heavy rain.

+ In spite of staying up late, Hoa gets up early and goes to school on time.

II. Cấu trúc với In spite of, Despite

1. In spite of:

In spite of + N /NP /V-ing, clause

Clause + In spite of + N / NP /V-ing

Ví dụ:

+ In spite of being warned many times, those kids want to swim in that river.

+ Those kids want to swim in that river in spite of being warn many times.

2. Despite:

Despite + N /NP /V-ing, clause

Clause + Despite + N / NP /V-ing

Ví dụ:

+ Julie loved Tom despite his football obsession

+ Despite this rain, I want to go for a run

In spite of và Despite có thể được viết lại bằng: In spite of / Despite the fact that + clause

Ví dụ:

+ Despite the fact that it is raining, I want to go for a run.

+ In spite of the fact that she was fired so many times, she want to have a good job.

Lưu ý:

Tránh việc nhầm lẫn cách viết của hai cụm từ với nhau:

Inspite, Despite of -> In spite of, despite.

Các dạng bài tập ngữ pháp thường viết lại cấu trúc although, though, even though bằng cấu trúc in spite of, despite và ngược lại.
