Host: Today we are talking to Yuko Tanaka, professor in meteorology, who has been researching the impacts of El Nino and the affects that global warming might have on future El Nino events. Yuko, What can you tell us about your research?

Yuko: Well, we know that El Nino events have become more severe over the past 25 years. The 2015 event contributed to a record number of typhoons in the centre of Pacific. 16 were recored that year, and it is estimated that over 60 million people suffered from hunger and malnutrition in 2016 due to drought influenced by El Nino.

Host: Are they getting worse because of global warming?

Yuko: It’s possible yes and it’s likely to affect the event in the future What we don’t know is whether the events will become stronger or more frequent.

Host: So, what can we do to prepare for the next El Nino.

Yuko: Well, the good thing is that scientists can predict when they are coming and we can prepare. It’s important to have give early warning to community. Having an evacuation plan is essential. And of course, in a long time, this is just another reason why we all need to focus on global warming and do everything we can to stop it getting worse.
