Is tyre pollution causing mass deaths in vulnerable salmon populations?
Last week, a district judge in San Francisco presided over a three-day trial brought by West Coast fishers and conservationists against US tyre companies. The plaintiffs argue that a chemical additive used in tyres is polluting rivers and waterways, contributing to the deaths of coho salmon and other fish. If the court rules in their favour, the decision could set a precedent with wide-reaching implications.
The lawsuit emerged from an environmental enigma that lasted for decades: why endangered coho salmon in the Pacific Northwest were dying in large numbers shortly after heavy rainfall, just as they returned to streams to spawn. Before dying, the fish reportedly swam in circles with their mouths open, as if gasping. Scientists suspected stormwater runoff and labelled the pattern “urban runoff mortality syndrome”.
Researchers from Washington State University later identified a likely cause. In 2020, a study published in Science reported that leachate from car tyres contained a toxic compound lethal to salmon. The substance, 6PPD- quinone (6PPD-q), forms when 6PPD—a common tyre preservative—reacts and transforms. Scientists say 6PPD-q can wash from roads into creeks and rivers, with devastating effects on protected species.
The case was filed by the Institute for Fisheries Resources and the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations, represented by Earthjustice, citing multiple studies linking salmon deaths to 6PPD. The judge must decide whether tyre manufacturers are violating the Endangered Species Act by harming 24 protected fish populations.
Testimony highlighted sharp scientific disagreement. A key witness for the plaintiffs stated tyres are the main source of 6PPD-q in waterways and that even limited runoff could be harmful. In contrast, a defence expert argued the evidence relies too heavily on laboratory conditions and that 6PPD-q may degrade or react before reaching fish habitats. Tyre companies maintain 6PPD is essential for safety and claim no viable alternative is currently available, though they say they are participating in regulatory efforts to find one.
