When it comes to Japanese culture, manga cannot go unmentioned. Despite the fact that the first known manga comic appeared in 1902, manga owes its origins to the emaki, the first illustrated narrative scrolls from the Nara period in the 8th century, and the Ehon, ukyo-e print books from the Edo period. In 1814, the famous artist Hokusai used the term “manga” for his sketchbooks with the aim of expressing the notion of drawings caught on the spot. His collection of illustrations called “Hokusai manga” including scenes of daily life as well as landscapes, natural elements, representations of Japanese mythology and spirits enjoyed great success in Japan and abroad.
During the Meiji period, when the isolation policy of Japan came to an end, the Western influences gained a strong presence in the country, even in the early form of manga. European cartoonist such as Wirgman and Ferdinand Bigot contributed to the birth of comic strips in Japanese media. This resulted in the publication of the first real manga in 1902. Its author, Rakuten Kitazawa, gained in popularity with his other artworks such as Kodomo no tomo or Shonen Kurabu, and he was considered one of the founders of manga.
The mid-20th century witnessed the manga boom due to the influence of American comics. The manga became a way of escaping, especially for those who had to face great difficulties. The talented cartoonist Osamu Tezuka greatly contributed to this phenomenon.
