The team STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In the past, these fields were thought to be mainly for boys. Girls were held back by prejudices and expectations that influenced their education and career paths. Although the situation has improved now, not many female students are pursuing STEM courses. A report by UNESCO in 2017 shows that women only account for 35% of STEM students in higher education when STEM jobs are now considered as the careers of the future.
Governments and organizations are trying their best to encourage girls and women to join STEM fields. UNESCO, for example, aims to improve the participation of females in STEM education and employment. Hopefully that will reduce the gender gap in STEM professions. The organization also wishes to help countries to have gender-responsive STEM education. Last but not least, they want to raise awareness of STEM’s importance among girls and women. It is likely that there will be more and more female pioneers and leaders in STEM in the future.

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African- American civil rights activist. Ms. Parks was a 42-year-old worker in Montgomery, Alabama when she caught a bus on December 1, 1955. Shortly after she sat down, a white man got on the bus and had to stand. At that time, there were segregation laws which required African-Americans to make room for white passengers. Ms. Parks refused to comply with the bus driver’s demands for her to move. She said, “No, I am tired of being treated like a second-class citizen”. She was convicted of breaking the law. Therefore, she had to go to jail for one day and was fined $10. However, her act of bravery sparked a famous bus boycott that lasted 381 days. It also led to the end of segregation laws throughout America’s South. In 1956, the Supreme Court declared that African Americans could sit wherever they wanted. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act banned all racial discrimination in public places. The mayor of Detroit praised her courage and strength. He said she was a symbol of the civil rights movement. He also said: “Just by a simple act of sitting down she stood up for so many people”.
