• as a young man, became a teacher in his hometown

• 1993: received the title "Outstanding Teacher"

• 2005: Vietnam Book of Records awarded him the title "First Teacher to Use His Feet to Write"

Death and influence:

• September 28, 1970: died at the age of 75

• Vietnamese students are still taught about him as an example of why you should believe in yourself.

Yvonne Young Clark, also known as Y.Y. Clark, was born in 1929 in Houston, Texas, USA. From a young age, she loved building and fixing things. Between 1947 and 1951, she attended Howard University, where she was the only woman in her class and became the first woman to earn a degree in mechanical engineering.

Finding a job was difficult because of her skin colour and gender, but in 1955, she got married and moved to Tennessee at the age of 25. She began working as an engineering professor at Tennessee State University, where she was the first female member of her department. She worked there for the next 55 years, inspiring generations of students. During her summer breaks, she collaborated with NASA, contributing to the development of the Saturn V rocket engine and the special box used to bring moon samples back to Earth.

Clark received many awards for her contributions to engineering and education. She passed away in 2019 at the age of 89. In her honour, a scholarship was established at Tennessee State University, ensuring her legacy will continue to inspire future engineers.
