Trong tiếng Anh có hai loại mạo từ: không xác định (a/ an) và xác định (the).

I. Mạo từ A/ An trong tiếng Anh 

- Chúng ta sử mạo từ không xác định a và an trước danh từ đếm được, số ít khi người đọc hoặc người nghe không biết chúng ta đang ám chỉ đến đối tượng nào.

Eg: I want to buy a souvenir. (Tôi muốn mua một món quà lưu niệm.)

- Chúng ta sử dụng mạo từ không xác định a dùng trước một danh từ số ít, có phiên âm bắt đầu bằng 1 phụ âm

Ex: a cat, a pen, a book, a university, …

- Chúng ta sử mạo từ không xác định an dùng trước một danh từ số ít, có phiên âm bắt đầu bằng 1 nguyên âm

Ex: an actor, an apple, an hour, …

II. Mạo từ xác định The trong tiếng Anh

Dùng The trong các trường hợp:

1. Danh từ đã được nhắc đến trước đó

Ex: There are 3 cats on the table. The cats are drinking milk and the milk is good.

2. Dùng trong cụm: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening

3. Dùng the khi người nói ngầm chỉ 1 vật nhất định nào đó (người nghe cũng sẽ biết)

Ex: Be careful! You’re spiling coffee on the floor.

4. Trong cấu trúc the + noun + giới từ + the + noun

(Đứng trước một danh từ mà sau danh từ đó có một mệnh

đề hay cụm từ theo sau làm rõ nghĩa).

Ex: The man in the red shirt is my boss.

5. Danh từ được bổ nghĩa bởi mệnh đề quan hệ thì phải dùng the

Ex: The teacher that we had last semester was especially good.

6. The + nhạc cụ

Ex: I was able to play the piano when I was 3 years old.

7. Dùng the + south/ north/ west/ east

Ex: To the north, you can see a range of mountains.

8. Mạo từ the dùng trước tên của một ngôn ngữ hoặc tôn giáo đã được làm cho xác định bởi một mệnh đề tính từ, một cụm tính từ, hoặc một cụm giới từ.

Ex: The English spoken in American is only a little different from British English.

9. Dùng the với tên sở thú, vườn hoa, viện bảo tàng, học viện và công ty

10. The + tính từ: chỉ tập hợp người (động từ số nhiều)

Ex: The rich should hep the poor.

11. Dùng the nói về vật chỉ có duy nhất.

Ex: The Earth moves around the sun.

12. Dùng the với tên sông, suối, đại dương, quần đảo. Nhưng nếu tên sông, hồ đứng sau thì không cần the

Ex: The Congo River is in Africa Nhưng Moutain Everest, Lake Ba Be

13. Dùng the trong so sánh nhất Ex: Nga is the most beautiful girl in our class.

14. Các từ sau luôn đi với the: cinema, theater, office, cathedral

15. Được dùng với một số cụm từ đề cập đến môi trường vật chất

Ex: The environment, the weather, …

16. Mạo từ the đứng trước first, second, third, … và next, last, same, only

Ex: She was the first person I dated.

17. Dùng để đứng trước họ của một ai đó, ở dạng số nhiều để chỉ toàn thể gia đình.

Ex: The Johns have lived in this town for over 40 years

Không dùng The trong các trường hợp:

1. Với tên bệnh và chia số ít

Ngoại lệ: the flu, the measles, the mumps

2. Không dùng the nếu phương hướng đi kèm ngay sau một động từ chỉ hành động như go, travel, turn, look, sail, fly, walk, move

Ex: We are considering going south next year.

3. Không dùng mạo từ với tên ngôn ngữ hoặc tôn giáo chưa được làm cho xác định

4. Không dùng the với tên các ngôi sao: Mars, Venus, …

5. Mạo từ không được dùng với tên nước, tên thành phố hoặc bang

Ngoại trừ: The United States, The United Kingdom, The USA, The Philippines, The United

6. Không dùng mạo từ the trước các môn thể thao tennis, chess, golf, basketball, …
