Good morning and welcome to "Women of History." I'm going to talk about Amelia Earhart, one of the most famous female pilots of the twentieth century. She actually learned how to fly right here. Amelia was born in Atchison, Kansas, in 1897 and grew up with her parents and younger sister. When she was twenty-four, she took her first flying lesson. Six months later, she bought her first plane. She used it to set her first women's record by flying as high as fourteen thousand feet.

In 1928, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Seven years later, she became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific. Amelia was the first woman to do things only male pilots did. The American people loved her and she even received a medal from the president. In 1937, she was ready for a last challenge. She wanted to be the first woman to fly around the world. On June first, Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, began their twenty-nine thousand-mile journey. On July second, 1937, Amelia Earhart's plane disappeared. The last time anyone heard from her was at 8:45 a.m. Despite many searches over the years, no one knows what happened to Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. Today, she is remembered for being one of the greatest female pilots of the twentieth century.

Florence Nightingale is most famous for being the founder of modern nursing.

She was born in 1820 in Florence, Italy. She grew up in England with her parents and older sister. In 1844, she studied nursing in Germany and later went to London to work in a hospital. In 1854, Florence went to the military hospital in Scutari, Turkey, with 38 other women. They cleaned the hospital and improved conditions for the wounded soldiers. The death rate dropped from sixty percent to two percent within six months.

In 1855, Queen Victoria gave Florence an award and a piece of jewelry. Florence wrote Notes on Nursing in 1859 and in 1860, she opened St. Thomas' Hospital where she started the Nightingale Training School for Nurses. In 1908, she was given the merit of honor by King Edward VII. She died two years later in London. Florence Nightingale will be remembered for being the founder of modern nursing.
