1. Phân biệt "Much" và "Many" (Đều có nghĩa là "Nhiều")
Many + Danh từ đếm được số nhiều (những thứ đếm được 1, 2, 3... và có đuôi -s/-es).Ví dụ: many books (nhiều sách), many friends (nhiều bạn).
Lưu ý: Thường dùng trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi.
Much + Danh từ không đếm được (chất lỏng, tiền, thời gian, khái niệm trừu tượng).Ví dụ: much water (nhiều nước), much money (nhiều tiền).
Lưu ý: Thường dùng trong câu phủ định và câu hỏi. Trong câu khẳng định, người ta chuộng dùng a lot of / lots of cho cả hai loại danh từ.
2. Phân biệt "A" và "An" (Đều mang nghĩa là "Một")
Cả hai từ này đều chỉ đi với Danh từ đếm được số ít. Cách chọn tùy thuộc vào phát âm của từ đứng ngay sau nó:
An + Từ bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm khi phát âm (u, e, o, a, i).Ví dụ: an apple (quả táo), an egg (quả trứng).
Mẹo nhỏ: Chú ý âm câm. Ví dụ: an hour (vì chữ "h" câm, phát âm là /aʊər/).
A + Từ bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm khi phát âm (các chữ cái còn lại).Ví dụ: a book (cuốn sách), a cat (con mèo).
Mẹo nhỏ: Chú ý các từ viết là nguyên âm nhưng phát âm là phụ âm. Ví dụ: a university (phát âm là /juː-/).
