A. Lý thuyết cách sử dụng từ To be
1. Các dạng của động từ tobe
- Thì hiện tại: is, are, am
Is: đi với chủ ngữ số ít (she - cô ấy, he - anh ấy, it - nó, tên riêng...)
are: đi với chủ ngữ số nhiều (you - bạn, we - chúng tôi, they - họ, danh từ số nhiều)
am: đi với chủ ngữ I (tôi)
Phủ định: tobe + not = isn't, aren't, am not
- Thì quá khứ: was, were
was: đi với chủ ngữ số ít (she - cô ấy, he - anh ấy, it - nó, tên riêng...), I (tôi)
were: đi với chủ ngữ số nhiều (you - bạn, we - chúng tôi, they - họ, danh từ số nhiều)
Phủ định: tobe + not = wasn't, weren't
2. Một số cách sử dụng đặc biệt động từ tobe
Tobe of + (cụm) danh từ = to have: có (dùng để chỉ tính chất hoặc tình cảm)
Ví dụ: Mary is of a gentle nature. (Mary có một bản chất tử tế)
Tobe of + danh từ: Nhấn mạnh cho danh từ ở sau
Ví dụ: The newly-opened restaurant is of (ở ngay) the Leceister Square (Cửa hàng mới mở ở ngay Leceister Square)
To be + to + verb: Để truyền đạt các mệnh lệnh hoặc các chỉ dẫn
Ví dụ: No one is to leave without the permission (Không ai rời đi khi chưa có chỉ dẫn)
Dùng với mệnh đề if khi mệnh đề chính diễn đạt một câu điều kiện (Nếu muốn... thì phải).
Ví dụ: If we are to get there by lunch time we had better hurry (Nếu chúng tôi muốn ăn trưa đúng giờ thì phải làm việc nhanh hơn)
Được dùng để thông báo những yêu cầu xin chỉ dẫn
Ví dụ: He asked the company where he was to land (anh ấy yêu cầu chỉ dẫn của công ty nơi anh ấy đến)
Để truyền đạt một dự định, một sự sắp đặt.
Ví dụ: She is to get married next month (Cô ấy sẽ cưới vào tháng tới)
Were + S + to + V = If S + were + to + V: Thế nếu (giả thuyết)
Ví dụ: Were I to tell you that he passed his exams, would you believe me (Nếu tôi nói anh ấy đã vượt qua kì thi, bạn sẽ tin tôi chứ)
B. Bài tập và hướng dẫn giải
Bài tập 1: Điền các động từ tobe phù hợp vào chỗ trống
Mary ...... of a gentle nature.
No one ...... to leave without the permission.
If we ...... to get there by lunch time we had better hurry.
He asked the company where he ...... to land.
...... I to tell you that he passed his exams, would you believe me.
Bài tập 2: Chuyển các câu sau sang tiếng Anh phù hợp
1. Bản chất của anh ấy là thân thiện.
