LIGHT POLLUTION: A CITY SEES THE STARS
On 26 September 2019, the streets of Geneva, Switzerland, went completely dark. This was not due to a power failure. Instead, the city decided to turn off the lights to allow people to enjoy the night sky and see the stars. Normally, this is hard to do in cities because of light pollution.
Light pollution occurs when streetlights and building lights make the night sky too bright. This creates many problems. Animals can get confused, thinking it is still daytime, so they sleep less. Birds that travel to warmer places in autumn use the moon and stars to guide them, but light pollution makes this difficult. Some insects and birds fly into buildings because they are attracted to city lights and often die.
Light pollution also affects humans. It can cause trouble sleeping, headaches, and stress. Most importantly, it prevents us from seeing the natural beauty of the night sky. Many people have never seen the Milky Way because of city lights.
Fortunately, we can reduce light pollution by turning off unnecessary lights and using curtains to block light. With these simple actions, we can enjoy the stars and the beauty of the night once again.
Question 29. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Light pollution has negative effects on animals, humans, and our ability to see the night sky.
