In Asia, tropical cyclones are known as typhoons, while in the Americas, they are known as hurricanes. Once these storms reach the northern hemisphere, they spin around to the left like a wheel. Their wind speeds are sixty kph or higher. U.S. hurricane watchers are based out of Miami, Florida, at the Tropical Prediction Center.

Meteorologists assign a name to a hurricane the moment they notice it. Any given name, male or female, is acceptable. What is the purpose of naming tropical cyclones? Because of the name, people are more likely to stay informed about hurricanes and the risks they pose.

International weather group the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) decides on the names. Using the English alphabet, the WMO compiles name lists. There is a distinct letter at the beginning of every name on the list. Each year's list begins with the storm's name that made landfall first. The naming process for the second hurricane continues. If Hurricane Abel is the name of the first one, then Hurricane Betty could be the name of the second. You won't see any names starting with Q, U, X, Y, or Z on these lists. The number of names starting with these letters is quite small.

Asian nations use a different list that the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization has compiled. The majority of the names on this list are those of plants, animals, and trees, with only a handful of human names scattered throughout.
