The impersonal passive

1. a. Read part of the conversation. Pay attention to the underlined part. Đọc đoạn sau của đoạn hội thoại. Tập trụng vào phần được gạch chân.

Can you find another example of the impersonal passive in the conversation? Bạn có thể tìm thêm các ví dụ về cấu trúc bị động khách quan trong đoạn hội thoại.

It's said that this complex of monuments is one of the wonders of Viet Nam.

b. When do we use the impersonal passive? Can you think of any rules? Khi nào ta sử dụng bị động khách quan? Có bất kì quy luật gì không?

Chúng ta sử dụng thể bị động không ngôi để diễn tả ý kiến của người khác. Nó có thể sử dụng với động từ tường thuật, bao gồm say, think, believe, know, hope, expect, report, understand, claim...

2. Complete the sentences using the correct passive form of the verbs in brackets. The first one has been completed for you. Hoàn thành các câu sử dụng đúng thể bị động của động từ trong ngoặc đơn. Câu đầu tiên đã được hoàn thành cho em.

1. It is claimed that Po Nagar Cham Towers were built in the 8th century by the Cham people in central Viet Nam.

(Người ta cho rằng tháp Chăm Po Nagar được xây dựng vào thế kỷ thứ 8 bởi người Chăm ở miền trung Việt Nam.)

2. It is said that the Cham people built Po Nagar Cham temple complex to honour Yang Ino Po Nagar, mother of the kingdom.

(Người ta nói rằng người Chăm đã xây dựng ngôi đền Po Nagar Cham để tôn vinh Yang Ino Po Nagar, mẹ của vương quốc.)

3. It is believed that the Po Nagar Cham Towers were built on the site of an earlier wooden temple, which was burned by the Javanese in A.D., 774.

(Người ta tin rằng Tháp Chăm Po Nagar được xây dựng trên vị trí của một ngôi đền bằng gỗ trươc đó, được đôt bởi người Java năm 774 sau Công nguyên.)

4. It is understood that the Po Nagar Kalan is the main tower, which is one of the tallest Cham structures.

(Người ta hiểu rằng Po Nagar Kalan là tháp chính, là một trong những cấu trúc cao nhất của người Chăm.)

5. It is known that a sculpture of the goddess Mahishasuramardini may be found above the entrance to the main temple.

(Người ta biết rằng một tác phẩm điêu khắc của các nữ thần Mahishasuramardini có thể được tìm thấy ở trên lối vào ngôi đền chính.)

6. It is thought that in the 17th century, the Viet people took over the temple tower, calling it Thien Y Thanh Mau Tower.

(Người ta cho rằng vào thế kỷ 17, người Việt đã tiếp quản tháp đền, gọi nó là tháp Thiên Thiên Thanh Mậu.)

After the verb suggest, we can use M-ing or a clause with should:

S + suggest + V-ing

S + suggest + [that) + S + (should) + bare infinitive

5. Write answers to the following questions using suggest + Ving/clause with should and the prompts in brackets. Then practise them with your partner. The first one has been completed for you. - You have forgotten to bring your wallet when going shopping.

I suggest you come back home and take your wallet.
